Why silverware?

Why silverware? Why didnt people choose to eat and drink from palladium, ivory, or other materials? Of course many people did. Throughout history people have used gold, clay, wood, and a wide range of other items at mealtime. For many of those who chose silver, however, it was more than just a fad or a symbol of financial standing. Ancient civilizations reportedly used silver because they recognized a connection between the metal and their health. Today, people are also finding silver to be increasingly useful in health-related applications. But will these uses have a material effect on the silver market?

For thousands of years, individuals have used silver at the table, on the battlefield, and in healthcare. The metal has been relied upon to prevent and treat infections, to treat wounds, to prevent food spoilage, and to prevent water contamination. Since long ago, the metal has been credited as having antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties.

Medical uses of silver and preventative applications

Many readers have probably received a silver treatment at least once, as silver nitrate is commonly placed in the eyes of newborns to prevent infections that could cause blindness. Silver has also been widely used in dentistry to fabricate fillings.

Today, the uses of silver for its healing and preventative properties are growing.

    Follow us

For example, it was only in 2007 that the US Food and Drug Administration approved the marketing of silver-coated breathing tubes. Prior to this approval, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year, 15 percent of patients on ventilators contracted ventilator-associated pneumonia. For tens of thousands of people these infections proved fatal. Including silver in the fabrication of these endotracheal breathing tubes reduces this risk and has likely saved many lives.

Silver is also used in much the same way for catheters and other medical implantation devices. The metal is used to coat surgical instruments and emergency ward equipment to prevent and reduce the transmission of infections.

Wound creams, gels, and powders are made with silver, and the metal is fabricated into wound dressings because it is considered toxic to germs and can prevent the invasion and livelihood of bacteria and yeast. Silver has also been found to reduce the adhesion of dressings to wounds and thus improves the comfort of burn victims.

A recent edition of Silver News spotlights the Trinity Bed Protection System. The covering system is supposed to provide an effective and impermeable barrier between patients and the surfaces they lie on, such as mattresses and stretchers. A notable benefit of this bedding is that it is supposed to retain itsantimicrobialproperties even after repeated washings.

Preventative medicine often is overlooked by pilot studies in hopes of finding solutions to more efficient and cost-effective health policies, said Ken Thorpe, the director of the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, or PFCD.

Thorpe, also a professor of public health at Emory University, spoke about prevention of chronic diseases at the Michigan Health Policy Spring Forum, held Monday afternoon in the James B, Henry Center for Executive Development, 3535 Forest Road.

MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine Dean William Strampel said he has worked with the PFCD for more than a decade, and MSU has hosted the forum a gathering of medical professionals, business leaders and state policymakers for 26 years.

Its one of those things that we will all say is very important to us, he said.

Thorpe said there are three approaches to preventative care that often go overlooked: building healthy habits, detecting diseases early and managing diseases to avoid complications.

He also stressed the importance of working within a community care network, bringing together medicine, business and commerce to strengthen the health systems.

The PFCD, a series of seminars focusing on health policy issues, is launching a new initiative in Michigan to unite those health field professionals and determine a way to strengthen health care at a lower cost.

Thorpe said the current health care system is very reactive, and people seem more willing to pay for medical maladies when they arise, but not to prevent diseases in the first place.

Truvada, a popular HIV treatment pill, was approved for preventative use by an FDA panel on Thursday, a milestone in the fight against AIDS.

Truvada, a popular HIV treatment pill, was approved for preventative use by an FDA panel on Thursday, a milestone in the fight against AIDS.

The Food and Drug Administration’s advisory committee voted 19-3 in support of the drug’s use for controlling HIV infection among the most at-risk group – men who have sex with men, Reuters reported.

“I think this is a huge milestone,” Dr. Robert Grant, associate director of the Center for AIDS Research at the University of California, who led the panel’s research, told CBS News. “I think we are in an era for the first time when we can see the end of the AIDS epidemic.”

More from GlobalPost:Truvada, an HIV treatment pill, one step closer to being approved for prevention by FDA

The pill, which is manufactured by California-based Gilead Sciences, combines two medicines (Emtriva and Viread) that inhibit the reproduction of HIV, NPR reported.

While Truvada is already approved as an HIV treatment, and doctors are allowed to prescribe it “off-label” for prevention, the FDA panel’s approval formally allows the drug to be marketed for preventative use, according to the Associated Press. An official decision from the agency is expected by June 15, though the FDA usually follows advisers’ recommendations, the AP reported.

Despite the approval, the panel raised several concerns during their 12-hour meeting on Thursday, including the probability of Truvada reducing the use of condoms, the most reliable defense against HIV, CBS News reported. The experts also debated the pill’s effectiveness amongst women, who showed much lower rates of protection in studies, according to CBS.

More from GlobalPost:ARV: Treatment as prevention

The daily pill also needs to be taken diligently: patients who didn’t take Truvada regularly were not protected, CBS reported.

“The trouble is adherence, but I don’t think it’s our charge to judge whether people will take the medicine,” Dr. Tom Giordano of Baylor College of Medicine, who voted in favor of the drug, told CBS News. “I think our charge is to judge whether it works when it’s taken and whether the risks outweigh the benefits.”

5/10/2012 By Pfc. Franklin E. Mercado , 2nd Marine Logistics Group

According to the Center for Disease Control, in 2010 an estimated 216 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide and 655,000 people died from the disease.

Sailors with Preventative Medicine Unit, 2nd Marine Logistics Group are working diligently to ensure diseases, such as malaria, do not threaten Marines and sailors aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Throughout the year, PMU performs many tasks to keep the living conditions on base at a high standard. They inspect chow halls, barracks and working facilities for health hazards.

Complaints about pests are constant with the warm weather and rising number of insects. The heavily wooded and wet areas aboard the base are also conducive to a thriving mosquito population.

On May 8, Sailors with PMU ventured across the base to plant traps and conduct their research of the installations mosquito population.

There havent been many outbreaks of malaria in the U.S. compared to other stricken places, but it doesnt stop the unit from doing all they can to keep it that way.

We dont have any cases in the area, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Charles A. Hill, a preventive medicine technician with PMU. We still do regular trapping and testing of mosquitoes from around the base.

Camp Lejeune has a large quantity of grassy and moist areas, which is why it is important for traps to be spread out across the vast installation, explained Hill.

We spread the traps out as far as we can, he said. We put them on Midway Park, Onslow Beach, around the Naval Hospital, and a lot more places on the base, so we can get a wide variety of mosquitoes.

PORTLAND, Ore.The infamous 1980s television commercial that featured the tag line “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” became the butt of a thousand jokes. But for the elderly, susceptibility to falls and resulting injuries is no laughing matter.

Now, a development effort at Texas Tech University, sponsored by Texas Instruments Inc., is taking aim at preventing falls by analyzing posture and gait to send warning alerts to the elderly before they fall. The project has already enlisted volunteers at Texas Tech’s Health Science Center to perfect the wireless wearable sensor and is on track next for clinical trials at the first U.S. on-campus geriatric teaching facility, Texas Tech’s Geriatric Education and Care Center.

“We have tried all sorts of sensor placements, from leg-mounted inertial sensors to slippers with pressure sensors in their soles, but Texas Instruments’ low-power microcontrollers and wireless radio combined with a torso-mounted MEMS accelerometer and gyrolike an external pacemakergives the best results,” said lead scientist on the project, Texas Tech EE professor Donald Lie.

After a three-year development effort, Lie’s team has crafted not only the torso-mounted wireless sensor but also the software analytics running on a PC that wirelessly monitors patients, resulting in algorithms that can reliably detect falls regardless of in which direction, which Lie claims is difficult to differentiate from the many ways that people plop down into their beds, cars seats and the various pieces of furniture around the home.

The MEMS sensor and wireless radio module is clipped on the belt, or for women not wearing a belt on the back of their bra, and contains a MEMS accelerometer, MEMS gyroscope, TI’s MSP430 microcontroller and CC2500 radio frequency (RF) transceiver and uses the ultra-low-power SimpliciTI network protocol running a proprietary software stack developed on TI’s ez430-RF2500 development platform.

“We became interested in this project at Texas Tech, because it went beyond just fall detection, but aspired to preventative measures,” said TI Fellow Allen Bowling. “By analyzing the dynamics of posture and gait–the way people are standing or walking before a fallwe hope to be able to send an alarm instructing them to grab hold of something or sit down before they fall.”

If the patient does end up falling, an alarm is sent wirelessly to a care provider, but the goal is to code the analyticswhich today runs on a clinician-monitored PCfor the MSP430 microcontroller so alarms can be issued to patients regardless of whether they are in range of a wireless router or not.

The team also has its sights on monitoring other vestibular (balance related) disorders and diseases including Parkinson’s, dementia and epilepsy, in hopes of issuing warnings to those patients of impending episodes thereby enabling them to take preventative measures.

“We believe that these projects will really make a significant difference in the clinical care of geriatric populations,” said Lie, who credits his team of collaborators, including doctors Tam Nguyen, Steven Zupancic, Andrew Dentino, Ron Banister, and Tim Dallas.

Contact: David Kelly david.kelly@ucdenver.edu 303-315-6374 University of Colorado Denver

AURORA, Colo. (May 7, 2012) New research from the University of Colorado School of Medicine shows that school-based health centers are highly effective in delivering comprehensive care, especially vaccines to adolescents.

The study, published today in the journal Pediatrics, highlights the value of a `captive audience’ in a school setting where students can be easily reminded to get recommended vaccinations.

“School-based health centers can provide comprehensive care to children and adolescents who are hard to reach,” said CU School of Medicine professor of pediatrics Allison Kempe, MD, MPH, and lead author of the study. “I think it’s a very important model especially in underserved and low income areas. School-based health centers are not prevalent across the United States but I think they should be.”

Kempe, director of the Children’s Outcomes Research Program at Children’s Hospital Colorado, said the scope of immunizations for adolescents has expanded markedly over the last few years, prompting discussions about a platform of inoculations for this population similar to those given to infants.

Immunizations recommended for adolescents include the meningococcal conjugate vaccine; tetanus-diptheria-acellular pertussis vaccine and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

“While new vaccines targeted for adolescents certainly hold great promise, they also face certain challenges,” Kempe said. “Adolescents are an age group that is less likely to access health care and only 9 percent of all health care visits by adolescents are for preventative care.”

And then there are issues of parental consent, lack of health insurance, missed chances for vaccinations during routine doctor visits and scattering of immunization records among multiple providers.

Kempe and her fellow researchers, funded by the Centers for Disease Control, studied vaccination outcomes among sixth graders at four school-based health centers at Denver area schools.

There may be new found hope for patients whose vision is threatened when medicine injected directly into the eyes fails to cause abnormal blood vessels to recede. While injectable drugs called angiogenesis (an-gee-oh-jen-esis) inhibitors are considered a modern miracle and have become the standard of care for patients with the fast-progressive form of macular degeneration, they are not foolproof. For the first time researchers report that an oral nutriceutical, used on a last resort basis, rapidly restores vision to otherwise hopeless patients who face permanent loss.

Stuart Richer OD, PhD, Director, Ocular Preventative Medicine-Eye Clinic, James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, North Chicago, Illinois, says all other therapies were exhausted before employing the oral nutriceutical under compassionate-use protocols on a case-by-case basis. Usually most patients respond to medicine injected directly into the eyes, he says, but about one in three patients recover driving vision and one in six patients go on to experience permanent vision loss and others may refuse needle injections directly into the eyes, making them candidates for this rescue medicine.

Three successfully treated cases were presented at the annual Association For Research In Vision & Ophthalmology meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

One striking case is an 88-year old woman whom retinal specialists said was beyond any help offered by conventional medicines or surgery. The nutriceutical helped this hospitalized woman regain her ability to see faces, read a menu and visualize her handwriting in just four days. -As she was an inpatient were also able to observe that her 40-year history of low-blood pressure and migraines improved after months of use,- said Dr. Richer.

In another case a 75-year old man with failing vision experienced recovery of vision in 5 days and was able to renew his driver-s license after taking just 7 nutriceutical capsules.

Dr. Richer says 16 of the first 17 cases responded positively to nutriceutical medicine. There were no side effects reported. Because these patients faced impending loss of vision, for ethical reasons no patients received inactive placebo pills. He says it is unknown whether this nutriceutical produces such positive results in the more common dry form of macular degeneration, but the benefit to vision is typically observed in both eyes and is self-evident.

Dr. Richer says in these first cases he has monitored, blind spots (called scotomas) disappear, time to recover from bright light (glare recovery) is reduced, and contrast vision (shades of grey) as well as visual acuity (ability to see letters on a chart) generally improve within 3-6 weeks with the nutriceutical. -With our instruments we documented a more youthful appearance of retinal tissues as well as improved underlying circulation. There were also other improvements in health observed or measured outside of the eyes that were unanticipated,- notes Dr. Richer.

A new study in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine predicts that 42% of Americans will be obese--with 11% of the populace being severely obese--by 2030.

A new study in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine predicts that 42% of Americans will be obese–with 11% of the populace being severely obese–by 2030. The study, “Obesity and Severe Obesity Forecasts Through 2030,” was conducted by Duke University and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) researchers. But if those numbers sound daunting, consider this: other predictive methods have the obesity figures coming in much worse.

According to the study, a linear time trend would forecast that 51% of the population would be obese by 2030. The methodology used in this study is based on nonlinear regression models to arrive at the lesser figure of 42%. According to the study’s overview, it was conducted in 20092010 and used data from the 1990 through 2008 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS).

The government-defined standard for obesity in adults is body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30. The definition of obesity for children for this study was defined as a BMI greater than or equal to the age- and sex-specific 95th percentiles of the 2000 CDC growth charts. BMI is calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared, rounded to one decimal place.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — When we’re stuck in traffic, the frustration we take out on other drivers is taking an unseen toll inside our bodies. That stress is no joke.

“It can cause reproductive problems, and increased risk of depression,” Dr. Amy Bentley Illescas says.

New research in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine shows those who live more than 10 miles from their jobs are more likely to have higher blood pressure and weight issues.

Michael Delarosa drives more than an hour for work every day.

“The traffic and trying to make it to appointments is frustrating,” Delarosa says.

Dr. Bentley explains that if you face that frustration to and from work, it can set off a chain of unhealthy events.

“And so if you’re tired, by the time you get home all you want to do is crash,” Dr. Bentley says. “Or for some people who are stress eaters, all they want to do is eat.”

You might not feel like exercising after that. If you can’t avoid the commute — and the stress it brings — it’s important to make healthy eating and exercising a priority in your day.

Dr. Bentley suggests using your lunch break to take a walk around the block to de-stress and get a little exercise in your day.

[DOHA] A Qatari healthcare innovation developed at the country’s science and technology park will be rolled-out in clinics in Italy, under a new collaboration agreement signed last month (15 April).

The Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) will collaborate on innovations in preventative medicine with the Italian insurance company, Fondo di Assistenza Sanitaria Integrativa.

As part of the agreement, the Italian company will roll out Qatar’s technology for remote health monitoring, called ‘RASAD’, to its national network of over 2,000 clinics.

RASAD is the first ‘Made in Qatar’ technology in a domain other than fossil fuel energy to be commercialised internationally, according to the QSTP’s executive chairman, Tidu Maini.

The technology uses sensors that measure physiological features, such as heart rate. These sensors link up wirelessly to software that analyses physiological data and alerts doctors to emerging health problems in individual patients.

“Using RASAD to monitor [for example] physical activity or a patients’ heart behaviour will help health authorities prevent diseases, make treatments more effective, and define new health policies,” Maini told SciDev.Net.

The new agreement will also see the Qatari science park and the Italian firm exchange information on preventative medicine with a focus on heart disease and diabetes.

Maini added that RASADis also used in a wide array of industries, such as engineering and construction, where it can mitigate health hazards that workers are exposed to.

    NEW YORK, May 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ —

The Wall Street Journal’s MarketWatch.com reports that the United States National Bobsled and Skeleton Team has noticed a decline in injuries since incorporating chiropractic professionals into its medical team two years ago. The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress credits this care with helping the team earn its most recent world championship. Dr. Marvell Scott, a sports medicine expert, agrees that the well-rounded medical approach of the team’s doctors has limited the injuries its members have sustained. As such, he urges athletes to take advantage of the benefits that chiropractic provides.

Dr. Eugene Byrne is an orthopedic surgeon, as well as the chief medical officer for the team. “For sports that focus primarily on power and speed, like bobsledding and skeleton, a team approach to healthcare has proven to be most effective,” explained Dr. Byrne. “Repeatedly, the athletes are jostled back and forth during runs, resulting in excessive stress endured by the lower body. Due to advanced ability in addressing musculoskeletal and neuroskeletal conditions, doctors of chiropractic provide essential care to the athletes.”

Dr. Byrne adds that the medical team, with the addition of chiropractic care in 2010, has been able to improve the strength and functionality of athletes. This, ultimately, increases the quality of their performance. In addition to providing adjustments to keep the body in alignment, chiropractic care helps athletes learn muscle control, as well as strength and restoration.

Dr. Marvell Scott sees the effects that chiropractic has on athletes every day through his Performance Health Program. In providing concierge, physical performance, and sports medicine, he has witnessed the benefits that chiropractic provides to athletes. As a result, he encourages athletes to utilize this care as often as necessary.

“Chiropractic adjustments are definitely part of the treatment and preventative process here at Performance Health,” commented Dr. Marvell Scott. “The chiropractor on staff works with most of our top athletes, who are involved in baseball, basketball, track, and football, just to name a few. Having chiropractic care in our integrated practice helps create a well-rounded approach to serving our athletes.”

This “well-rounded approach” is something that many athletes need to stay in the game. Dr. Marvell Scott himself, a former football player, knows firsthand the benefits that chiropractic care can provide. He has utilized his own experiences to create the Performance Health Program, which takes a comprehensive approach to patient care.

    ABOUT:

Dr. Marvell Scott is the founder of the Performance Health Program. He specializes in concierge medicine, performance medicine, and sports medicine, and as such understands the value of chiropractic within the athletic arena. Through personalized care plans, he assists patients in recovering from injury and chronic medical conditions.

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) A new study published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine suggests women in their 40s with extremely dense breasts or a mother or sister with breast cancer have an increased risk of getting the disease and should be screened every other year.

However Dr. Kimberly Wiele, a breast imaging specialist at Barnes Jewish Hospital says risk based screening recommendations are not a good strategy. If we limit screenings for women in their 40s only to those women considered to be high risk were going to miss a lot of breast cancer, said Wiele.

Wiele says the majority of women who get breast cancer in their 40s do not have the risk factors identified in the study. The bottom line is women should begin screening for breast cancer at age 40. We believe they should have their mammogram done every year, not every other year.

Becky Wyant, 54, gets a mammogram every year because of her family history. I believe in preventative medicine. My sister has breast cancer or had it. Shes now cancer free and my mother died of breast cancer, said Wyant.

The American Cancer Society released a statement after learning about the latest research, underscoring its recommending that all women 40 and older should get a mammogram every year.
